Wellness Place - A Dream Fulfilled
Wellness Place exists because two women recovering from breast cancer had a dream.  They envisioned a community-based, non-medical facility in the northwest suburbs of Chicago where people living with cancer could gather for education, encouragement and empowerment - at no fee.

Co-Founders
Linda Murphy and Myrna Porter spearheaded a start-up, grassroots effort in late 1998 and within a year Wellness Place received not-for-profit status from the State of Illinois.

Community Response
Wellness Place quickly became a reality because of overwhelming support from the community and generosity of an anonymous donor who purchased an 11,000 square foot house for the cancer resource center in Palatine, Illinois.  The donor also provided a five-year pledge to help Wellness Place establish itself financially.

Financial Support
Funded entirely through donations from individuals, corporations and foundations, Wellness Place has served thousands of people touched by cancer - at no fee - since its opening in September of 2000.  Today, Wellness Place serves participants from 60 communities in northwest Cook County, and parts of McHenry, Lake and Kane Counties.

Professional Staff & Services
Holding true to its mission, Wellness Place is staffed by professionally trained, licensed counselors, social workers and clinical psychologists.  These professionals facilitate educational programs, networking and support groups, mind, body and spirit services, and social activities for people living with cancer, their family, friends and caregivers.

Homelike Setting
Wellness Place offers a comfortable, homelike setting that differs from a typical medical environment.  It includes quiet sitting areas, meeting rooms, and peaceful spaces for yoga, tai chi chih and massage therapy.  A resource center includes a lending library, literature kiosks and computer sofware to research all aspects of cancer.

Volunteers
A strong corps of volunteers serving on the board of directors, auxiliary, medical advisory council and numerous committees contribute their talent and expertise to help Wellness Place fulfill its mission of education and service.  Co-founders Linda Murphy and Myrna Porter continue their active support in programming, outreach and fund-raising initiatives.

This exhibit, Finding Strength, reflects and supports the mission of Wellness Place
which is to enhance the quality of life for those touched by cancer through
education, encouragement and empowerment.

The goal of the exhibit is to capture the strength and dignity
of those dealing with the everyday struggles of cancer.
